Under Mahama, fuel prices, dumsor, and galamsey are rising – Miracles Aboagye

After just three months in power, Mr. Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a Presidential Staffer in the former Akufo-Addo administration, has provided an overview of Ghana’s current state under President John Mahama ‘s rule.

The nation is currently dealing with unstable electricity supplies (Dumsor), rising fuel prices, increased illicit small-scale mining (Galamsney), worker terminations, and rising pricing for products and services, according to Miracles Aboagye, who made this statement prior to the 2025 budget presentation.

He wrote on his Facebook page, “Reading the 2025 Budget in 48 hours… As NDC Galamsey kingpins finally take to the streets to confront security forces and drive them away from their galamsey sites, Dumsor is on the rise and Galamsey is intensified since the actual galamseyers are in town. The level of pollution in our water bodies is at an all-time high.

Fuel costs are rising while the cost of products and services is skyrocketing, and thousands of Ghanaians have been fired from their jobs for no apparent reason. Despite the government’s assurance, first-year university students feel anticlimax after paying their own tuition.

Long-standing information regarding some phony neutrals and prejudiced CSOs has finally been verified. These so-called neutrals are rushing for political appointments while flaunting their NDC party cards in our faces after deceiving the entire nation into believing they promoted patriotism.

With some roots in the dark past, our nation is undergoing a reset. Both positive and negative effects are possible. For the sake of our nation’s future, we have a duty to maintain our government alert and focused on fulfilling its social contract with its citizens.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the finance minister, was informed by Dr. Joseph Obeng, president of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), that traders do not anticipate additional taxes in the 2025 budget statement.

According to him, GUTA will support any action taken by the government to broaden the tax base to include those who do not pay taxes.

“We don’t anticipate further taxes. Additionally, we won’t be concerned if new taxes are designed to entice those who aren’t paying taxes to do so. We won’t be concerned about that one. Compounding the taxes for those of us who pay will be our main concern, though.

“We applaud the expansion of the tax net. And it’s good news that they’re using whatever method to bring in a lot more people who aren’t paying taxes,” he said.

The fiscal policy blueprint for 2025 has been accepted by the Ghanaian administration in advance of its formal presentation to Parliament on March 11.

The administration’s commitment to economic stabilization and sustainable growth is reaffirmed by this decision, which was adopted at a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Government Communications, reassured Ghanaians in a news conference following the meeting that the government is still dedicated to keeping its social and economic commitments.

He affirmed that the administration’s 120-day commitments, which include the elimination of the COVID charge and betting tax, will be reflected in the fiscal policy.

The budget will also provide hope and strategic policies for the country’s development, while outlining the financial situation that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government inherited.
