NDC, NPP supporters clash over DRIP equipment in Salaga; several injured

Scores of supporters of both the NPP and NDC in Salaga, capital of the Salaga South Constituency of the Savannah Region have sustained various degrees of injury after engaging in a free for all fight following the arrival of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) equipment in the constituency.

A confrontation ensued between the two parties when their supporters went to usher in the equipment into Salaga from Damongo.

In August this year, Member of parliament for Salaga South Constituency Hajia Zuweira Ibrahima, while on a campaign tour in the Klor zone of the constituency, stated that the DRIP equipment were procured from the MPs share of the District Assembly Common Fund and that the equipment have been handed over to Members of Parliament by President Akufo-Addo.

β€œAll 275 MPs told government that he should use our share of the common fund in arrears to procure road construction equipment.”

β€œGovernment heeded to our calls and procured the equipment. President Akufo-Addo called us and handed over the equipment to us and Insha Allah, the day the equipment will arrive, I shall follow to come and hand them over to you” she emphasized.

District Chief Executive for East Gonja Richard Broni, in a quick rebuttal disputed the claims made by the MP and emphasized that the equipment were procured by government and not from the MPs share of the Common fund.

β€œLet me state now and clear that the MPs’ claim is false, lies and non-existent.”

β€œThe Common Fund of all the 275 MPs put together for the whole year cannot buy one of these machines,” he said.

The East Gonja Municipal Assembly was the first to move its share of the DRIP equipment from Damongo after it was launched.

Even before the arrival of the equipment, both the NDC and NPP had announced to their members to come out in their numbers to receive the equipment.

This led to a misunderstanding between the supporters. Dozens of the supporters of both parties sustained injuries and were rushed to the Salaga Government Hospital.

No arrest has since been made.

Meanwhile, the East Gonja Municipal Security Committee is expected to meet with leadership of the two political parties on the development on Friday September 6.
